Choosing words

It is so hard when writing poetry or prose to choose the right words. I have tried to think of the right words many times but they always seem to escape me. The question is how to broaden my vocabulary. The best remedy that I know of is to read, read, read. Nothing can enlarge one's vocabulary more than reading. I used to read romantic fiction  all the time but now I have trained myself o enjoy literary fiction as well. Dickens, Cooper, etc. They all can introduce many words into a readers vocabulary unknowingly. Don't be discouraged by not being able to find the wlord to express what you are thinking. You can always utilize a thesaurus or a dictionary. Don't give up.

  1. Your post reminded me of a youtube video of a man telling the story of the Three Little Pigs using Shakespearean English. It makes me chuckle each time I listen to it. I don't know if I can include the link here or not, but I'll try. It's and interesting example of word choice.
